Projects of Common Interest (PCIs) represent key energy initiatives of the European Union, aimed at building a sustainable, secure, and climate-neutral energy system within the framework of the European Green Deal. The second list of Projects of Common Interest (PCIs) and Projects of Mutual Interest (PMIs), established by Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/764, published on 9 April 2026, includes 235 strategic projects that benefit from accelerated permitting procedures and funding opportunities under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
In this context, NEK EAD plays an important role in supporting green energy in Europe with three priority projects in the current edition of the PCI/PMI list – Hydro-pumped storage in Yadenitsa (PCI 2.21), Hydro-pumped storage in Batak (PCI 2.23), Hydro-pumped storage Dospat (PCI 2.24). These projects aim to contribute to energy storage capacity, the integration of renewable energy sources, and the strengthening of the flexibility and security of the electricity system in Bulgaria and the Southeast European region.
